EcoShopper is a mobile application developed with Flutter that empowers consumers to shop more sustainably. By scanning a product’s barcode, the app retrieves detailed information through the OpenFoodFacts API, giving users instant access to this information as well as eco-scores ranging from A to E. These scores are calculated based on key factors such as packaging sustainability, ingredient sourcing, and overall product life cycle impact. In addition to the eco-score, EcoShopper presents transparent data about each product, helping users understand exactly how their everyday purchases affect the environment.

EcoShopper was primarily designed with accessibility and speed in mind. While shopping, users can make informed decisions in seconds through the scan of a barcode, bridging the gap between awareness and real-time action. Using the Flutter framework allows cross platform usage on both iOS and android when deployed and allows for the most potential to upscale. Moreover, the free to use OpenFoodFacts API allows users to be able to see data about products from a constantly updated database.

On a larger scale, the app supports global initiatives by directly aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Specifically, it contributes to SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production by encouraging more sustainable consumer behavior, and to SDG 13: Climate Action by reducing the carbon footprint associated with poor purchasing habits. By transforming shopping habits at the consumer level, EcoShopper contributes to a greener, more responsible future.
